Welcome to Gateway Labrador

What You'll Find at Gateway Labrador

Located along the scenic Trans-Labrador Highway (Route 500), Gateway Labrador is a charming log building that has been welcoming travellers and supporting our local community since June 28, 2003. We’re more than just a visitor centre - we’re a place where people come to explore, learn and connect. Whether Lab West is your main destination or just one stop on a larger journey, Gateway Labrador is where your experience begins.
Visitor Information Centre
Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are here to help you get the most out of your visit. We offer maps, travel advice, brochures, and local recommendations. You’ll also find a curated selection of locally made arts and crafts, perfect for picking up a unique souvenir or gift.
Edmund Montague Exhibit Hall
Gateway Labrador is home to the Edmund Montague Exhibit Hall, an engaging museum that tells the rich and diverse story of Labrador West. The exhibit traces over 3,500 years of human history, from the arrival of Indigenous peoples, to the French fur traders at Ashuanipi in 1695, the founding of Fort Nascopie by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1838, and the region’s growth through mega-projects in rail, hydro, and mining. Our goal is to challenge the idea that Labrador West’s story begins and ends with mining. Instead, we present a deeper narrative of cultural heritage, resilience, and connection to the land.
Local Arts & Crafts
Browse a unique selection of items crafted by local artists and artisans. From quilts and pottery to photography and handmade goods, each piece reflects the heart of our community. You’ll also find classic souvenirs like stickers, postcards, keychains, and magnets. Whether you're searching for a meaningful keepsake or a thoughtful gift, it’s a perfect way to take a piece of Labrador home with you.
GordON Parsons MEMORIAL Duck Pond
Just behind the building, a peaceful trailhead connects to the Frontier 53 Trail Network. A short walk brings you to a quiet duck pond, complete with a bench and interpretive information boards - an ideal place to relax and, in spring, watch for ducklings. This beautiful spot is dedicated to Gord Parsons, a passionate birder, trailblazer, and devoted community member - his legacy lives on in the nature he loved.
Wind Phone
Installed in October 2024 by the duck pond, the Wind Phone offers a quiet, reflective space for those grieving or remembering loved ones who have passed. Visitors are welcome to pick up the phone and, if they wish, speak to those they miss. It serves as a symbolic and heartfelt way to stay connected. Thank you to the Gauthier family for sharing this special project with us.
